The next M.I.S.T. tournament will be held on February 19th, 2012 at Spare Time in Brunswick, ME. Check in time is 9:15 AM, with tournament bowling commencing at 10:00 AM sharp. The cost is only $45, with a $10 high game pot available and plenty of $5 brackets to wet your scratch bowling appetite. We will be bowling on a unique set of oil patterns at the next M.I.S.T. tournament, as we will have (2) different patterns to play on. On every left hand lane we will put out the Team USA Sydney oil pattern, which is 33 ft. in length, and on every right hand lane we will be bowling on the Team USA Paris oil pattern, which is 47 ft. in length. This is a first time we will be using two different types of oil pattern for a M.I.S.T. tournament, but we are always looking for new challenges for our scratch bowlers, and this promises to be one of those for sure. Thank you everyone who has supported the M.I.S.T. these last three seasons, and I hope you all enjoy the product we put out, and any comments and suggestions are always welcome. Please feel free to address those to James Goulding III, M.I.S.T. Tournament Director at any tournament, or e-mail me at bosoxfans1918@hotmail.com. I hope to see you all in Brunswick next month, good luck and good bowling everyone!

M.I.S.T. Tournament #5 Recap: Family Fun Lanes, Bangor, ME.:

Hello again bowlers, and welcome to the recap of the M.I.S.T. tournament held on January 22nd, 2011 at Family Fun Lanes in Bangor, ME. This is the 5th of our (7) tournament rotation of the 2011 – 2012 bowling season, and the action is really heating up, especially for the Bowler of the Year title. Joe Colcord came into the tournament leading the race, and looked to put further distance between him and the rest of the field for the coveted title. I would like to say a big thank you to Andy at Family Fun and all of his staff for once again providing an excellent venue for the M.I.S.T., and we are already looking forward to coming back next season. The M.I.S.T. has always been about bringing together the best group of scratch bowlers in northern New England, and challenging them on the lanes to not only compete with each other, but have to compete against a variety of equally challenging lane oil patterns. This month we bowled on the Stockholm Team USA oil pattern. This is a challenging, very short, 34ft. oil pattern that promotes rapid adjustments and good spare shooting to score well on it. Our bowlers found out just how challenging this pattern is just by looking at the qualifying scores. Tournament leader Zachary Kay shot an 810 series for four games, and it took 787 to make match play, and 783 to make the cash cut. So, if you think you are going to come to a M.I.S.T. tournament and have it be a carry contest, think again, we provide some of the toughest shots around for any tournament, and we are always looking to new and exciting oil patterns for our bowlers to compete on. We had 22 entries this month, which meant that we would have (5) cashers, with the top (4) advancing to the match play finals, here are the scores with the cut line denoted by a “—-“:

Zachary Kay – 810

Joe Colcord – 808

Jay Joslyn – 800

Dave Perry – 787

James Goulding Jr. – 783

———————————

Jason Ward – 768

Rick Campbell – 767

Jimmy Clark – 754

Cory Lagner – 739

James Goulding III – 734

James Ward – 725

Dean Lagner – 715

Roger Sorrells – 714

Jason Spaulding – 706

Scott Pomroy – 690

Bob Nile – 683

Justin Quinones – 680

Tim Schneider – 646

Brett Mason – 630

Steve Closuit – 630

John Archer – 627

Arthur Meether – 602

Our 5th place finisher, missing the top (4) by only (4) pins was last month’s champion, James Goulding Jr. He shot a nice 783 series and picked up (40) BOY points on the day. Nice bowling James!

Here is the result from our quarter final match between 3rd seeded Jay Joslyn and 4th seeded Dave Perry. Jay posted an impressive 800 series during qualifying and Dave shot a 787 to grab the last match play spot. Here are their match scores:

Dave Perry – 184

Jay Joslyn – 195

Dave did a nice job today, but in a match that was decided by spares and not strikes, Jay was just a little better on this day. Dave had a fantastic day, taking home a fine 4th place finish, and picking up 50 BOY points for his effort. Nice job Dave! Our next match would feature the 2nd seeded Joe Colcord and Jay Joslyn. Joe qualified 2nd with an 808 total, one of only (2) bowlers on the day to finish above 800. Here are the results of our semi-final match:

Jay Joslyn – 145

Joe Colcord – 210

Jay did a good job of keeping the match close during the first 5 frames, but Joe once again proved his mettle as he has done all season by pulling away the final 5 frames for the victory. Jay has nothing to hang his head about, though, as he picked up not only a fine 3rd place finish, but 60 BOY points on the day. Superb bowling today Jay! This set up a great final match between our top seeded bowler Zachary Kay and Joe Colcord. Zach edged Joe out by only (2) pins to earn the top seed with an 810 score, which marks Zach’s first ever M.I.S.T. finals appearance. It was a classic power vs. tactician match, and here are our results:

Joe Colcord – 211

Zachary Kay – 177

This match lived up to the hype, as both bowlers went toe to toe and shot for shot, and Joe kept a slight lead throughout, making every shot he needed to keep Zach in his rear view mirror. Zach made a valiant charge in the 6th and 7th frames, setting up for a good final few frames. The 9th frame was the key, as Zach had a crucial open and Joe capitalized, finishing off the 10th frame for the tournament victory. Zach did a great job in his first ever title match in the M.I.S.T., battling hard all day long, and coming up just a few pins short of his first ever M.I.S.T. title. But, he will be back, and he has a nice 2nd place finish and 70 Boy points to help console him along the way. Well done Zach!

Today’s story, once again, was Joe Colcord, and his proof that he can truly bowl well across multiple types of oil patterns. This was Joe’s 2nd title of the season, as he lengthens his lead in the Bowler of the Year race. He picks up 100 BOY points for the victory, and will try and salt away the title next month when we travel to Brunswick, but there are still many out there who may have something to say about that! Congratulations Joe on your fine day of bowling, and I look forward to seeing you in Brunswick next month. Here is the list of Bowler of the Year points earned from the M.I.S.T. tournament at Family Fun Lanes in Bangor, ME. I will have an updated year long BOY points standings on a separate report:

1) Joe Colcord – 100

2) Zachary Kay – 70

3) Jay Joslyn – 60

4) Dave Perry – 50

5) James Goulding Jr. – 40

6) Jason Ward – 5

7) Rick Campbell – 5

8.) Jimmy Clark – 5

9) Cory Lagner – 5

10) James Goulding III – 5

11) James Ward – 5

12) Dean Lagner – 5

13) Roger Sorrells – 5

14) Jason Spaulding – 5

15) Scott Pomroy – 5

16) Bob Nile – 5

17) Justin Quinones – 5

18.) Tim Schneider – 5

19) Brett Mason – 5

20) Steve Closuit – 5

21) John Archer – 5

22) Arthur Meether – 5

The next M.I.S.T. tournament will be held on February 19th, 2012 at Spare Time in Brunswick, ME. Check in time is 9:15 AM, with tournament bowling commencing at 10:00 AM sharp. The cost is only $45, with a $10 high game pot available and plenty of $5 brackets to wet your scratch bowling appetite. We will be bowling on a unique set of oil patterns at the next M.I.S.T. tournament, as we will have (2) different patterns to play on. On every left hand lane we will put out the Team USA Sydney oil pattern, which is 33ft. in length, and on every right hand lane we will be bowling on the Team USA Paris oil pattern, which is 47ft.

Hello M.I.S.T. bowlers, and welcome to the recap of the M.I.S.T. Tournament held at Spare Time Recreation Center in Waterville, ME. on October 16th, 2011. I would like to personally thank Andy Couture, owner of Spare Time Recreation, and all the staff in Waterville for being such gracious hosts. They opened up early to serve breakfast to our bowlers, and did a fantastic job servicing all of our needs all day long. Thank you all! This was an exciting tournament, full of suspense, honor scores, and an exciting final four bowling off for the title. We bowled on the PBA Tournament of Champions (TOC) oil pattern, which has added length and volume, and allows for multiple angles into the pocket, but finding carry is the key to success on this pattern. We had 26 entries this month, and I thank each and every bowler for coming out to support the M.I.S.T. each and every month. This meant we would pay out (6) spots, with the top (4) rolling off in our step ladder finals. Top qualifier, setting a M.I.S.T. record with an astounding 1038 for 4 games, was first time M.I.S.T. bowler Stan Trombley. Stan actually bowled an 804 series for his final three games of qualifying! Also, we would like to congratulate Sarah Pelletier for bowling a 300 game during qualifying. It is our first 300 of the season, and the 4th 300 in M.I.S.T. history. Well done both of you! Here are the qualifying scores, with the cut line separated by a “—-“:

Stanley Trombley – 1038
Jason Ward – 965
Jimmy Clark – 952
Joe Colcord – 921
Josh Greenlaw – 905
Roger Sorrells – 900
———————————
Sarah Pelletier – 887
Hurley Oliver – 872
Joe Kenney – 871
Bob Grasse – 870
James Ward – 856
Rodney Haney – 852
Cory Lagner – 832
James Goulding III – 827
Ron Looman – 813
Dave Perry – 799
Rick Campbell – 782
Jason Duryea – 774
Bob Violette – 738
Chris George – 729
Dennis George – 714
Adam Michaud – 713
Chuck Jewell – 694
Alan Harzewski – 672
Timothy Schneider – 642
Zachary Kay – 514*
* – withdrew due to injury

In 6th place, shooting a 900 for 4 games, went to Roger Sorrells, cashing in his first M.I.S.T. tournament of the 2011 – 2012 season. He picked up 35 BOY points on the day. 5th place shooting a 905, sitting in the bride’s maid position was Josh Greenlaw, also cashing in his first M.I.S.T. of the 2011 – 2012 season. Josh picks up 40 BOY points for a very good day of bowling. Well done both of you!

Our first step ladder match pitted last season’s M.I.S.T. Bowler of the Year Joe Colcord and perennial M.I.S.T. casher Jimmy Clark. Joe qualified 4th with a 921, while Jimmy was the 3rd seed, shooting a fine 952 during qualifying. This match had some serious star power, and both bowlers showed their mettle during this game. Joe took control early on, but Jimmy made a strategic ball switch in the 6th frame, and put some pressure on Joe down the stretch. But, Joe was able to keep his foot on the gas, and not let Jimmy back in the match and moved on to the semi-finals with a final score of 234 – 204. Jimmy took home 50 BOY points on the day, nice bowling Jimmy!

The semi-final match featured our 2nd seed, Jason Ward, facing off against Joe Colcord. Jason qualified 2nd with an impressive 965, and looked to build off that success to try and take down Joe in this match. But, Joe was not last seasons BOY for nothing, as he once again got out to an early lead on Jason, as Jason struggled to find a good look to the pocket. Jason did get it together late in the match, and forced Joe to stay clean in the 9th and 10th frames to win, and Joe did just that. Joe topped Jason with a final score of 207 – 187 to move on to the title match. Jason had a great day, showing consistency right from game one, and was rewarded with a 3rd place finish, and 60 BOY points on the day. Great bowling Jason!

Our final match was truly a heavyweight battle in terms of talent. Our top seed was Stanley Trombley, who obliterated the field with a 1038 qualifying round, which is a M.I.S.T. record for a 4 game total. He would square off with Joe Colcord, trying to win his 3rd match of the day and run through the entire finals field en route to a title. No surprise, this was our highest scoring match of the day, as we would expect nothing less from these two talented bowlers. As was the story with the previous two matches, Joe jumped out to an early lead, and forced his opponent to work from behind, which is always a hard position to be in during a one game, winner-take-all, match. Stanley showed his toughness as he did battle back, but Joe started with the front 7 strikes, and never gave Stanley that small window he needed to catch up, which gave Joe the tournament victory, with a final score of 269 – 216. Stanley, competing in his first ever M.I.S.T. tournament gave us quite a show, and proved to the other bowlers he could be a threat to win each month with the way he tamed the TOC oil pattern. Stanley earned 70 BOY points on the day, and gained a big heaping of respect from his fellow competitors along with it. Well done Stanley, and we hope to see you next month!

With all the story lines from the tournament, the one that matters most is the person who won the tournament, and that was Joe Colcord. Joe combined the ability to qualify high, with the mental toughness to run through 3 solid competitors on the way to his first M.I.S.T. title of the 2011 – 2012 season. If he keeps bowling like this, it won’t be his last title of the season. Joe served notice that the BOY race goes through him, and it is hard to argue with the results. Joe picked up 100 BOY points for the tournament victory, and positions himself very well in the race for the 2011 – 2012 M.I.S.T. BOY title. Congratulations Joe on a job well done. Here are the final standings from the M.I.S.T. tournament held at Spare Time Recreation in Waterville, ME. The BOY points earned from the tournament are listed to the right of each player’s name:

Hello again M.I.S.T. faithful, we had a great first tournament of the 2011-2012 season, at Spare Time Recreation Center in Augusta, ME. on September 18th, 2011. They put out their version of the difficult PBA Scorpion oil pattern, which brought the scores lower than your typical house shot, but that just made the competition that… much fiercer on the lanes. The feedback over the summer from all of our bowlers was that they wanted tougher lane conditions to challenge our scratch bowlers, and that was what we got on the Scorpion oil pattern. It took only 833 to lead the field, and a score of 785 to cash, which is the way big time scratch bowling should be. If you want to challenge yourself, and bowl against the best scratch competition from Maine and beyond, you have to bowl in the M.I.S.T. We also had (2) youth entries, now that the M.I.S.T. is S.M.A.R.T. certified, so if you are a high average youth bowler, come compete in the M.I.S.T. for the chance at earn scholarship money for college. I would first like to say a big thank you to Donna Bowden and all of her staff at Spare Time Recreation Center for their support of the M.I.S.T., and the fabulous service they gave us all morning long. We had 30 entries for this tournament, which is a record for the first M.I.S.T. of the season, so that is a great sign for scratch bowling this coming season. With the 30 entries, it meant that we would take (7) cash qualifiers, with the top (4) of those moving on to the step ladder match play finals. Here are the qualifying scores, with the cut line denoted by a “—“:

Hurley Oliver – 833
James Ward – 819
Adam Michaud – 804
Dave Perry – 795
Curt Knightly – 793
Joe Colcord – 788
Rick Campbell – 785
——————————-
Steve Hardy – 776
Brett Mason – 773
Jason Duryea – 759
Cory Lagner – 756
Bob Grasse – 754
Jeremy Allen – 733
Ron Looman – 730
Sarah Pelletier – 730
Jason Ward – 728
Chuck Jewell – 720
Joe Kenney – 709
James Goulding III – 705
Jimmy Clark – 690
Troy Trombley – 685
Josh Corum – 668
Chris George – 662
Matt Knightly – 661
Bruce Thompson – 652
Dennis George – 629
Kenney Sweet – 623
Art Meether – 603
Bennett Meyers – 596
Timothy Schneider -591

Rick Campbell finished in 7th place, edging out Steve Hardy by (9) pins for the final cash spot. Rick picked up 30 Bowler of the Year (BOY) points on the day. Nice bowling Rick! Also cashing in the 6th position and picking up 35 BOY points was Joe Colcord. He shot a fine 788 on the day. 5th place, or our so-called “bride’s maid” position just missing match play was Curt Knightly. He shot a 793 for the four game qualifier, and by doing so picked up 40 BOY points on the day. Congrats to all of our cashers for doing a great job figuring out a tricky lane condition.

Our first stepladder match featured Adam Michaud against Dave Perry. Dave qualified 4th with a score of 795, while Adam qualified 3rd with an 804 score. The match was close the entire way. Adam doubled late in the match on the challenging oil pattern, and that was enough to give him the win and move on to the semi-final match. The final score was 201-193. Dave had a solid outing, and shows that he is truly a force to be reckoned with in the M.I.S.T. this year. Dave finished 4th, picking up 50 BOY points on the day, congrats on a great day of bowling Dave.

The semi-final match featured a lefty-righty match up as our 2nd qualifier James Ward took on the previous match winner Adam Michaud. James had an outstanding qualifying round, going 819 for his four games. This match would prove to be very one sided, as Adam had a hard time finding his groove while James threw good shots and took advantage of a few key breaks in the match. James never let off the gas and kept Adam in his rear view mirror, outpacing him in the end to a final score of 258-137. Adam had nothing to be ashamed of, as he bowled fantastic all day, and finished in 3rd place, grabbing the crucial 60 BOY points that go along with the cash. Nice job Adam, see you in Waterville next month!

Our final match featured great bowlers in the state of Maine, as our top qualifier and first time M.I.S.T. finals qualifier Hurley Oliver, took on the red hot James Ward. Hurley was the class of the field all day long pacing the field with a fine 833 qualifying round. This was truly a heavy weight match in terms of talent, and as the pair of lanes started to break down, both bowlers would have to reach back into the pocket of experience to determine the winner of the title. This was another match where James really took command early, and showed that he was a force to be reckoned with on such a challenging Scorpion oil pattern. Hurley tried to hang in the match, but James was just too much on this day, and James pulled away late to win the match with a final score of 231-133. This was James first ever M.I.S.T. title, so congrats on the victory James. Hurley had nothing to hang his head about, though, as he plowed through the qualifying round, coming up just a little short against a tough opponent in the final match. Hurley picked up 70 key BOY points for his 2nd place finish, and showed that he is one tough cookie. Well done Hurley.

The story of the day was James Ward, and the way he made a tricky shot look easy. He showed the mental toughness and physical ability that it takes to be a champion, and it was a well deserved honor on his part. James picks up 100 BOY points, and leads the field for the 2011-2012 M.I.S.T. Bowler of the Year title.
