M.I.S.T. Tournament #5 Recap, January 22, 2012: Family Fun Lanes, Bangor, ME.
M.I.S.T. Tournament #5 Recap: Family Fun Lanes, Bangor, ME.:
Hello again bowlers, and welcome to the recap of the M.I.S.T. tournament held on January 22nd, 2011 at Family Fun Lanes in Bangor, ME. This is the 5th of our (7) tournament rotation of the 2011 – 2012 bowling season, and the action is really heating up, especially for the Bowler of the Year title. Joe Colcord came into the tournament leading the race, and looked to put further distance between him and the rest of the field for the coveted title. I would like to say a big thank you to Andy at Family Fun and all of his staff for once again providing an excellent venue for the M.I.S.T., and we are already looking forward to coming back next season. The M.I.S.T. has always been about bringing together the best group of scratch bowlers in northern New England, and challenging them on the lanes to not only compete with each other, but have to compete against a variety of equally challenging lane oil patterns. This month we bowled on the Stockholm Team USA oil pattern. This is a challenging, very short, 34ft. oil pattern that promotes rapid adjustments and good spare shooting to score well on it. Our bowlers found out just how challenging this pattern is just by looking at the qualifying scores. Tournament leader Zachary Kay shot an 810 series for four games, and it took 787 to make match play, and 783 to make the cash cut. So, if you think you are going to come to a M.I.S.T. tournament and have it be a carry contest, think again, we provide some of the toughest shots around for any tournament, and we are always looking to new and exciting oil patterns for our bowlers to compete on. We had 22 entries this month, which meant that we would have (5) cashers, with the top (4) advancing to the match play finals, here are the scores with the cut line denoted by a “—-“:
Zachary Kay – 810
Joe Colcord – 808
Jay Joslyn – 800
Dave Perry – 787
James Goulding Jr. – 783
———————————
Jason Ward – 768
Rick Campbell – 767
Jimmy Clark – 754
Cory Lagner – 739
James Goulding III – 734
James Ward – 725
Dean Lagner – 715
Roger Sorrells – 714
Jason Spaulding – 706
Scott Pomroy – 690
Bob Nile – 683
Justin Quinones – 680
Tim Schneider – 646
Brett Mason – 630
Steve Closuit – 630
John Archer – 627
Arthur Meether – 602
Our 5th place finisher, missing the top (4) by only (4) pins was last month’s champion, James Goulding Jr. He shot a nice 783 series and picked up (40) BOY points on the day. Nice bowling James!
Here is the result from our quarter final match between 3rd seeded Jay Joslyn and 4th seeded Dave Perry. Jay posted an impressive 800 series during qualifying and Dave shot a 787 to grab the last match play spot. Here are their match scores:
Dave Perry – 184
Jay Joslyn – 195
Dave did a nice job today, but in a match that was decided by spares and not strikes, Jay was just a little better on this day. Dave had a fantastic day, taking home a fine 4th place finish, and picking up 50 BOY points for his effort. Nice job Dave! Our next match would feature the 2nd seeded Joe Colcord and Jay Joslyn. Joe qualified 2nd with an 808 total, one of only (2) bowlers on the day to finish above 800. Here are the results of our semi-final match:
Jay Joslyn – 145
Joe Colcord – 210
Jay did a good job of keeping the match close during the first 5 frames, but Joe once again proved his mettle as he has done all season by pulling away the final 5 frames for the victory. Jay has nothing to hang his head about, though, as he picked up not only a fine 3rd place finish, but 60 BOY points on the day. Superb bowling today Jay! This set up a great final match between our top seeded bowler Zachary Kay and Joe Colcord. Zach edged Joe out by only (2) pins to earn the top seed with an 810 score, which marks Zach’s first ever M.I.S.T. finals appearance. It was a classic power vs. tactician match, and here are our results:
Joe Colcord – 211
Zachary Kay – 177
This match lived up to the hype, as both bowlers went toe to toe and shot for shot, and Joe kept a slight lead throughout, making every shot he needed to keep Zach in his rear view mirror. Zach made a valiant charge in the 6th and 7th frames, setting up for a good final few frames. The 9th frame was the key, as Zach had a crucial open and Joe capitalized, finishing off the 10th frame for the tournament victory. Zach did a great job in his first ever title match in the M.I.S.T., battling hard all day long, and coming up just a few pins short of his first ever M.I.S.T. title. But, he will be back, and he has a nice 2nd place finish and 70 Boy points to help console him along the way. Well done Zach!
Today’s story, once again, was Joe Colcord, and his proof that he can truly bowl well across multiple types of oil patterns. This was Joe’s 2nd title of the season, as he lengthens his lead in the Bowler of the Year race. He picks up 100 BOY points for the victory, and will try and salt away the title next month when we travel to Brunswick, but there are still many out there who may have something to say about that! Congratulations Joe on your fine day of bowling, and I look forward to seeing you in Brunswick next month. The next M.I.S.T. tournament will be held on February 19th, 2012 at Spare Time in Brunswick, ME. Check in time is 9:15 AM, with tournament bowling commencing at 10:00 AM sharp. The cost is only $45, with a $10 high game pot available and plenty of $5 brackets to wet your scratch bowling appetite. We will be bowling on a unique set of oil patterns at the next M.I.S.T. tournament, as we will have (2) different patterns to play on. On every left hand lane we will put out the Team USA Sydney oil pattern, which is 33ft. in length, and on every right hand lane we will be bowling on the Team USA Paris oil pattern, which is 47ft. in length. This is a first time we will be using two different types of oil pattern for a M.I.S.T. tournament, but we are always looking for new challenges for our scratch bowlers, and this promises to be one of those for sure. Thank you everyone who has supported the M.I.S.T. these last three seasons, and I hope you all enjoy the product we put out, and any comments and suggestions are always welcome. Please feel free to address those to James Goulding III, M.I.S.T. Tournament Director at any tournament, or e-mail me at bosoxfans1918@hotmail.com. I hope to see you all in Brunswick next month, good luck and good bowling everyone!
