M.I.S.T. Tournament #4 Recap: Yankee Lanes, Portland, ME.

M.I.S.T. Tournament #4 Recap: Yankee Lanes, Portland, ME.

Hello bowlers and here is the recap from the M.I.S.T. Tournament held on December 11th, 2011 at Yankee Lanes in Portland, ME.  I would like to first personally thank Scott Bodlovick and all of his staff at Yankee Lanes for making our experience a great one as usual.  Also, a special thank you goes out to Nick Dalfonso Jr. for helping out and for the first time ever running a blind draw doubles for the 2nd game of qualifying, so thanks again for your efforts Nick!  The M.I.S.T. Tournament strives to find the toughest, fairest, and all around most challenging lane conditions for our scratch bowlers to compete on each month, and this month’s challenge was the USBC National oil pattern.  This is a fairly flat pattern, and makes you rely solely on speed control and accuracy to stay around the pocket and leave makeable spares.  This was our lowest scoring average of the 4 tournaments this season thus far.  The average for the field of (28) scratch bowlers was only 177.6, and the average to qualify for cash prizes in the top (7) was 185.5.  The high qualifier was 814, and let me tell you folks, that is a very fine score on this tough oil pattern.  So, with our (28) entries, we took (7) cashers and the top (4) rolled off for the title.  Here are the scores from highest to lowest from the (4) game qualifying round, the cut line denoted by a “—-“:

James Goulding Jr. – 814

Bob Nile – 806

Jimmy Clark – 793

Joe Colcord – 792

James Ward – 771

Steve Closuit – 755

Jason Ward – 742

——————————–

Miles Coplan – 733

Zach Kay – 732

Sarah Pelletier – 727

Andrew Blais – 726

Dean Lagner – 726

Bob Lorrain – 713

Nick Dalfonso III – 711

James Goulding III – 706

John Archer – 701

Rick Campbell – 693

Rich Hicks – 691

Chris George – 679

Josh Greenlaw – 677

Tim Schneider – 677

Adam Jordan – 665

Cory Lagner – 662

Kenny Sweet – 661

Bob Violette – 645

Tony Fernandez – 636

Roman Latno – 634

Jeff Moul – 623

Here is the 7th thru 5th place cashers with the Bowler of the Year points earned in ( ):

7th Place:  Jason Ward (30)

6th Place:  James Ward (35)

5th Place:  Steve Closuit (40)

Great bowling by our 5th thru 7th place finishers, and they picked up some valuable BOY points for their effort, along with cash prizes.  Well done.  Here is the result from the first match play quarter final between 4th seeded Joe Colcord, who qualified with a 792, and 3rd seeded Jimmy Clark, who qualified with a 793 total:

Joe Colcord – 212

Jimmy Clark – 224

Joe bowler well all day, but in a rare high scoring match, he was just bested by 12 pins by Jimmy.  Joe finishes in 4thplace and picks up a crucial 50 BOY points on the day, nice bowling Joe!  Here is the result of the semi-final match between Jimmy Clark and 2nd seeded Bob Nile, who shot a very nice 806 during qualifying:

Jimmy Clark – 175

Bob Nile – 186

This match was a slugfest from the 1st frame, as the lanes started to break down, and the transition was rough.  But, both bowlers gutted out a tough match, and in the end, it was Bob who made enough key shots down the stretch to secure the victory, and move on to the title match, the first one of his M.I.S.T. career.  Jimmy did a great job today, picking up a 3rd place finish, and 60 BOY points on the day.  Great shooting Jimmy!  Here is the result of the title match between Bob Nile, and our top seed, James Goulding Jr.  James was making his first career M.I.S.T. finals appearance, but has been around the Maine bowling scene for the better part of 4 decades.  This match was oozing with experience, so let’s get to the results:

Bob Nile – 195

James Goulding Jr. – 202

Once again, this was a hotly contested match, coming right down to the 10th frame.  Bob struck out in the 10th to force James to mark, and he left the 4-7 pare to convert for the win, which was a spare he missed earlier in the match, so this was no gimmie.  James got up, converted the spare and fired a ball down the middle for the count to win the match, and take home his first ever M.I.S.T. scratch tournament title.  Bob came up short, but has nothing to hang his head about, as in his first M.I.S.T. finals also, he won a match to advance to the finals, and came within 7 pins of a victory, so congratulations Bob on a fine day of bowling.  Bob picks up (70) BOY points, and a healthy dose of respect from those who were there watching the finals unfold.

Today’s story was James Goulding Jr., and his mastery of this tough USBC Nationals oil pattern.  Sometimes it is not easy being the top seed, as you have to wait for (2) matches to complete before your chance to shine, but James did just that, taking all of his experience and knowledge of lane play and using those tools to win the tournament.  James picks up a huge 100 BOY points, and throws his hat in the ring for our Bowler of the Year with only (3) tournaments to go in the 2011 – 2012 M.I.S.T. season!  Here are the final standings, and BOY points earned, from the M.I.S.T. tournament held at Yankee Lanes in Portland, ME. on December 11th, 2011:

James Goulding Jr. – 100

Bob Nile – 70
