M.I.S.T. Tournament #7 Recap: Spare Time Recreation, Lewiston, ME.:

Hello bowlers, and welcome to the season ending recap for the last M.I.S.T. tournament of the 2011 – 2012 bowling season, which was held on March 18th, 2012 at Spare Time Recreation in Lewiston, ME. I would first like to thank Scott Moore and all of his staff for making the M.I.S.T. feel welcome and helping everything run very smooth. Also, we would like to thank Moore’s Pro Shop for once again sponsoring the Bowler of the Year competition, which was won by Joe Colcord. Congrats Joe on a great season, and Joe will get his choice of ball drilled by Moore’s Pro Shop. Moore’s Pro Shop is THE premier pro shop in Maine and the ONLY place to get your next bowling ball, bag, or accessory purchase. Ask for Scott, James, or Ken and they can help you with all of your bowling needs. We competed on a tough 2008 Team USA oil pattern, which was very flat and 44ft. in length. This meant that spare shooting and a direct line to the pocket would both be keys to success. We had (23) entries, which meant that we would have (6) cashers, of which the top (4) would roll off for the title in our step ladder finals. Here are the qualifying scores with the cash line separated by a “—“:

Roger Sorrells – 883
Sarah Pelletier – 852
James Goulding III – 832
James Ward – 832
Miles Coplan – 793
Scott Moore – 791
———————————-
Rick Campbell – 779
Jerry Donna – 750
Justin Brawn – 749
Bob Nile – 742
Jimmy Clark – 742
Adam Jordan – 742
Cory Lagner – 740
Bennett Meyers – 729
Tyler Coplan – 717
Steve Closuit – 715
Bob Violette – 711
Jeremy Allen – 696
Jay Joslyn – 678
Art Meether – 670
Brandon Marcotte – 666
Jason Ward – 633
Troy Trombley – 619

As you can see, scores were lower on a tough shot, but that is what it should take when you bowl in a scratch tournament. Our 6th place finisher was Scott Moore, and Scott shot 791, earning 40 BOY points for his effort. The 5th place finisher was Miles Coplan, coming to us all the way from Manchester, NH. Miles grabbed 40 BOY points, shooting 793, and I would like to say thank you him for spreading the word into NH about the M.I.S.T.

Here is the result of our first step ladder match between 3rd seeded James Goulding III and 4th seeded James Ward:

James Goulding III – 167
James Ward – 152

This was a battle of attrition between two fierce competitors, as the shot played super tough on our championship pair of lanes 29 and 30. This match featured ZERO strikes total between the two bowlers, which is a M.I.S.T. first. But, the match came down to the 10th frame where so many matches often do. James Goulding marked to force James Ward to double for the win, and James Ward got an 8 count on his first ball in the 10th, giving the match to James Goulding. James Ward had a great day, though, and picked up 50 BOY points on the day. James Goulding advanced to face 2nd seeded Sarah Pelletier, who shot a fine 852 during qualifying. Here is the result of that match:

Sarah Pelletier – 216
James Goulding III – 200

This match was one sided from the first frame on. Sarah took control with a huge four bagger to start, and James was playing catch up the rest of the way. James had a chance to pounce on an open by Sarah in the 8th frame, but when he left a 7 pin on a pocket hit in the 9th, it sealed the match for Sarah. James struck out in the 10th, but it was too little too late as Sarah bowled a great match on a tough oil pattern and earned the win. James had a fine day, picking up a 3rd place finish and 60 BOY points for his effort. Sarah would become our first ever female bowler to compete in a title match as she would move on to face top seeded Roger Sorrells. Roger lapped the field with a fantastic 883 during qualifying, so here is the result of our title match:

Roger Sorrells – 200
Sarah Pelletier – 226

Once again, we had a situation where a bowler had to try and play catch up with red hot Sarah Pelletier. Roger got behind early and tried to mount a furious comeback in the last three frames, but he leaked one a little wide in the 9th and could not get the carry, which meant that Sarah Pelletier would go on to become the first ever female bowler to win a M.I.S.T. tournament with her 226-200 victory over Roger Sorrells. Roger did a great job today, showing his experience and talent with a 2nd place finish and nabbing 70 BOY points on the day. Good job Roger!

The story of the day was Sarah Pelletier and her mastery of this tough Team USA 44ft. oil pattern. She downed two very tough competitors in the step ladder finals, and earned her place as a M.I.S.T. tournament champion. Very well done Sarah, and congrats on being our first ever female champion! Sarah picks up 100 BOY points for the victory, well done!
Here are the Bowler of the Year points earned from the M.I.S.T. tournament held on March 18th, 2012 held at Spare Time Recreation in Lewiston, ME.:

M.I.S.T. RECAP: TOURNAMENT #6 2011 – 2012 SEASON
SPARE TIME, BRUNSWICK, ME.

Hello bowlers, and welcome to the score recap for the MIST tournament held on Sunday, February 19th, 2012 at Spare Time in Brunswick, ME.  First off, I would like to thank Dave Frye and all of his staff at Spare Time Brunswick for their hard work making the MIST feel welcome and always helping things run smoothly.  This is truly one of our favorite stops every season.

Also, the MIST would like to welcome DV8 Bowling into the fold as one of our tournament sponsors.  DV8 / Brunswick has been kind enough to donate a brand new Hellraiser Revenge bowling ball, the top of the line ball in DV8’s lineup, to the MIST to be given away at the last tournament being held on March 18th, 2012 at Spare Time Recreation in Lewiston, ME.  I have decided to do the drawing the most fair way possible, bowlers will receive (1) entry for the ball for every MIST tournament entry this season.  So, if you bowled in (2) tournaments this year, you have (2) chances to win.  If you bowled all (7) tournaments, you get (7) chances to win.  The more you support the MIST, the better your odds of winning.  The ball will be drawn at the conclusion of the tournament next month, so good luck everyone, and check out all of the wonderful bowling products DV8 has to offer at their website:  www.dv8bowling.com.  Thank you DV8 for stepping up and supporting some grass roots scratch tournament bowling!

That being said, this month’s tournament welcomed a new and unique challenge for the MIST bowlers.  We were bowling on (2) different oil patterns for the first time in MIST history, on one pair would be the 33ft. Sydney pattern, and on every other pair would be the 47ft. Paris oil pattern.  Each bowler got to see each oil pattern twice, making for some interesting game to game adjustments.  But, at the MIST we are looking for the best of the best in scratch bowling and scratch bowlers, and this new challenge meant you had to focus completely on every shot for all (4) games of qualifying.  The scores reflected the tough scoring pace, as the field average was only 185.7, with it taking a 798 to cash and an 841 for match play.  Those kinds of scores always mean spare shooting is critical, as it should be in scratch competition.  We had 34 entries, which meant that we would take (8) cashers and the top (4) rolled off in our step ladder finals.  Here are the qualifying scores, with the cash line separated by a “—–“:

Justin Quinones – 867
Derek Webb – 854
Jimmy Clark – 848
Zachary Kay – 841
Jason Ward – 838
Joe Colcord – 815
James Ward – 812
Emily Brigham – 798
—————————–
Audra Mercier – 795
Scott Moore – 795
Rick Campbell – 794
Andrew Hopkins – 792
Dave Perry – 787
Dean Lagner – 776
Sarah Pelletier – 774
Brett Mason – 750
James Goulding Jr. – 749
Troy Trombley – 748
Art Meether – 747
Cory Lagner – 746
Bob Nile – 746
Chris George – 724
Adam Jordan – 716
Alan Harzewski – 684
Joe Kenney – 683
Steve Closuit – 681
Mike Thibault – 677
Bob Violette – 674
James Goulding III – 669
Matthew Harzewski – 666
Nate Harzewski – 665
Josh Mercier – 637
Jay Joslyn – 628
Dave Wilson – 484

All of the bowlers who cashed did an outstanding job on a tough pair of oil patterns.  Here is the Bowler of the Year points earned by each bowler who cashed but missed the championship round, along with their finishing position:

8th)Emily Brigham – 30
7th)James Ward – 30
6th)Joe Colcord – 35
5th)Jason Ward – 40

Our first match featured 3rd seeded Jimmy Clark facing 4th seeded Zachary Kay.  Jimmy posted an 848 total during qualifying while Zachary fired an 841 total.  On this unique format, the higher seeded bowler got choice of oil pattern for each match, and Jimmy chose the shorter 33ft. Sydney oil pattern for this match.  This was an up and down battle, with both players keeping the ball in play on this tough broken down oil pattern.  But, Jimmy was able to find his groove late, as Zachary had a key miss in the 8th frame, and that was enough to give Jimmy a 201 – 178 victory.  Zachary had a good day of bowling, coming up just short in this match, but still able to pick up 50 BOY points on the day.  Well done Zachary!

Our next match featured 2nd seeded Derek Webb against Jimmy Clark.  Derek posted an impressive 854 during qualifying, and chose to bowl against Jimmy on the 47ft. Paris oil pattern.  Again, this was another tight match heading into the later frames, but Jimmy took a gamble making a huge move inside almost pointing the ball back toward the pocket and the move paid off as he found some carry and was able to string a couple of strikes together to pull out a 202 – 167 victory over Derek.  Derek had a fine day in his first MIST of the season, finishing in 3rd and grabbing 60 BOY points for his effort.  Nice going Derek.

Our championship match featured top seeded (and first time MIST finalist) Justin Quinones, against the buzz saw Jimmy Clark.  Justin led the field with an 867 qualifying total, doing his damage on the short 33ft. Sydney oil pattern.  He put up games of 258 and 258 on that pattern already and he knew that was the pattern he was going to live or die with in this final match.  Both players started with the front 4, a drastic change from the previous two matches scoring pace, and Justin split in the 5th for an open frame.  This gave Jimmy the chance to pounce, but he couldn’t keep the strikes coming, rather marking frames instead, which allowed Justin the time he needed to catch up.  Justin never looked back after the 5th frame open, striking out the final five frames for an impressive 264 – 220 win to pick up his first career MIST title.  Jimmy fought valiantly all day, and in any other match 220 would have been good enough, but Justin was just too much in this match today.  Jimmy had a great day, posting a 2nd place finish and nabbing 70 BOY points for his effort.

What a story, though, for Justin Quinones.  He travels over 5 hours to come to the tournament from Aroostook county, and then goes on to win the tournament. It’s these types of feel good stories why I love running the MIST, and you never know when a hidden talent may come out and surprise you like Justin did on Sunday.  Justin picks up the victory and 100 BOY points as well.  We hope that Justin can make it to more MIST tournaments in the future, well done!  Here are the final standings from the MIST tournament held at Spare Time in Brunswick, ME. with the BOY points next to each bowlers name. I will have the season long BOY points race on a separate report:

Justin Quinones – 100
Jimmy Clark – 70
Derek Webb – 60

M.I.S.T. Welcomes DV8 Bowling to our Sponsorship Ranks!

February 17, 2012 Leave a comment
Ok MIST bowlers here’s the exciting news! We are fortunate enough to have DV8 bowling come on board and sponsor the final MIST tournament this season, to be held on March 18th at Spare Time Recreation in Lewiston, ME. DV8 is giving the MIST a 15lb. Hellraiser Revenge to give away to one of our lucky tournament bowlers. DV8 recognizes the kind of grass roots effort in scratch tournament bowling that the MIST represents, and we would like to thank them sincerely for this donation. The Hellraiser Revenge is the latest ball in the DV8 lineup, and if it is anything like the other releases in the current DV8 line, it will be a winner for sure.
So, here is what is going to happen. I want to give the hardcore MIST supporters a good chance to win, while still making sure everyone who has supporte…d the MIST by coming out to even just (1) tournament this season has a chance to win this ball. So, I am putting names in a drawing for the ball, and you receive (1) entry for EACH time you have entered a MIST tournament this season. So, if you entered (2) tournaments, you have (2) entries toward the ball. If you have bowled in ALL (7) tournaments this season, then your name will be in the drawing (7) times! This way everyone has a shot, and your chances increase based on your number of entries. It is my way of saying thank you for supporting the MIST, and DV8′s way of saying thank you for keeping scratch bowling alive and well. I hope to see everyone this coming Sunday in Brunswick at Spare Time not only for your chance to bowl in the best scratch tournament in Northern New England, but you could also throw your name in the ring to win a new DV8 Hellraiser Revenge next month at our Lewiston tournament. Cost is only $45, with $5 scratch brackets and a $10 high game pot available too. Check in time is 9:15 AM with bowling commencing at 10:00 AM.

So, talk up the MIST this summer and we will see what happens next season!

The next M.I.S.T. tournament will be held on February 19th, 2012 at Spare Time in Brunswick, ME. Check in time is 9:15 AM, with tournament bowling commencing at 10:00 AM sharp. The cost is only $45, with a $10 high game pot available and plenty of $5 brackets to wet your scratch bowling appetite. We will be bowling on a unique set of oil patterns at the next M.I.S.T. tournament, as we will have (2) different patterns to play on. On every left hand lane we will put out the Team USA Sydney oil pattern, which is 33 ft. in length, and on every right hand lane we will be bowling on the Team USA Paris oil pattern, which is 47 ft. in length. This is a first time we will be using two different types of oil pattern for a M.I.S.T. tournament, but we are always looking for new challenges for our scratch bowlers, and this promises to be one of those for sure. Thank you everyone who has supported the M.I.S.T. these last three seasons, and I hope you all enjoy the product we put out, and any comments and suggestions are always welcome. Please feel free to address those to James Goulding III, M.I.S.T. Tournament Director at any tournament, or e-mail me at bosoxfans1918@hotmail.com. I hope to see you all in Brunswick next month, good luck and good bowling everyone!

M.I.S.T. Tournament #5 Recap: Family Fun Lanes, Bangor, ME.:

Hello again bowlers, and welcome to the recap of the M.I.S.T. tournament held on January 22nd, 2011 at Family Fun Lanes in Bangor, ME.  This is the 5th of our (7) tournament rotation of the 2011 – 2012 bowling season, and the action is really heating up, especially for the Bowler of the Year title.  Joe Colcord came into the tournament leading the race, and looked to put further distance between him and the rest of the field for the coveted title.  I would like to say a big thank you to Andy at Family Fun and all of his staff for once again providing an excellent venue for the M.I.S.T., and we are already looking forward to coming back next season.  The M.I.S.T. has always been about bringing together the best group of scratch bowlers in northern New England, and challenging them on the lanes to not only compete with each other, but have to compete against a variety of equally challenging lane oil patterns.  This month we bowled on the Stockholm Team USA oil pattern.  This is a challenging, very short, 34ft. oil pattern that promotes rapid adjustments and good spare shooting to score well on it.  Our bowlers found out just how challenging this pattern is just by looking at the qualifying scores.  Tournament leader Zachary Kay shot an 810 series for four games, and it took 787 to make match play, and 783 to make the cash cut.  So, if you think you are going to come to a M.I.S.T. tournament and have it be a carry contest, think again, we provide some of the toughest shots around for any tournament, and we are always looking to new and exciting oil patterns for our bowlers to compete on.  We had 22 entries this month, which meant that we would have (5) cashers, with the top (4) advancing to the match play finals, here are the scores with the cut line denoted by a “—-“:

Zachary Kay – 810

Joe Colcord – 808

Jay Joslyn – 800

Dave Perry – 787

James Goulding Jr. – 783

———————————

Jason Ward – 768

Rick Campbell – 767

Jimmy Clark – 754

Cory Lagner – 739

James Goulding III – 734

James Ward – 725

Dean Lagner – 715

Roger Sorrells – 714

Jason Spaulding – 706

Scott Pomroy – 690

Bob Nile – 683

Justin Quinones – 680

Tim Schneider – 646

Brett Mason – 630

Steve Closuit – 630

John Archer – 627

Arthur Meether – 602

Our 5th place finisher, missing the top (4) by only (4) pins was last month’s champion, James Goulding Jr.  He shot a nice 783 series and picked up (40) BOY points on the day.  Nice bowling James!

Here is the result from our quarter final match between 3rd seeded Jay Joslyn and 4th seeded Dave Perry.  Jay posted an impressive 800 series during qualifying and Dave shot a 787 to grab the last match play spot.  Here are their match scores:

Dave Perry – 184

Jay Joslyn – 195

Dave did a nice job today, but in a match that was decided by spares and not strikes, Jay was just a little better on this day.  Dave had a fantastic day, taking home a fine 4th place finish, and picking up 50 BOY points for his effort.  Nice job Dave!  Our next match would feature the 2nd seeded Joe Colcord and Jay Joslyn.  Joe qualified 2nd with an 808 total, one of only (2) bowlers on the day to finish above 800.  Here are the results of our semi-final match:

Jay Joslyn – 145

Joe Colcord – 210

Jay did a good job of keeping the match close during the first 5 frames, but Joe once again proved his mettle as he has done all season by pulling away the final 5 frames for the victory.  Jay has nothing to hang his head about, though, as he picked up not only a fine 3rd place finish, but 60 BOY points on the day.  Superb bowling today Jay!  This set up a great final match between our top seeded bowler Zachary Kay and Joe Colcord.  Zach edged Joe out by only (2) pins to earn the top seed with an 810 score, which marks Zach’s first ever M.I.S.T. finals appearance.  It was a classic power vs. tactician match, and here are our results:

Joe Colcord – 211

Zachary Kay – 177

This match lived up to the hype, as both bowlers went toe to toe and shot for shot, and Joe kept a slight lead throughout, making every shot he needed to keep Zach in his rear view mirror.  Zach made a valiant charge in the 6th and 7th frames, setting up for a good final few frames.  The 9th frame was the key, as Zach had a crucial open and Joe capitalized, finishing off the 10th frame for the tournament victory.  Zach did a great job in his first ever title match in the M.I.S.T., battling hard all day long, and coming up just a few pins short of his first ever M.I.S.T. title.  But, he will be back, and he has a nice 2nd place finish and 70 Boy points to help console him along the way.  Well done Zach!

Today’s story, once again, was Joe Colcord, and his proof that he can truly bowl well across multiple types of oil patterns.  This was Joe’s 2nd title of the season, as he lengthens his lead in the Bowler of the Year race.  He picks up 100 BOY points for the victory, and will try and salt away the title next month when we travel to Brunswick, but there are still many out there who may have something to say about that!  Congratulations Joe on your fine day of bowling, and I look forward to seeing you in Brunswick next month.  Here is the list of Bowler of the Year points earned from the M.I.S.T. tournament at Family Fun Lanes in Bangor, ME.  I will have an updated year long BOY points standings on a separate report:

1) Joe Colcord – 100

2) Zachary Kay – 70

3) Jay Joslyn – 60

4) Dave Perry – 50

5) James Goulding Jr. – 40

6) Jason Ward – 5

7) Rick Campbell – 5

8.) Jimmy Clark – 5

9) Cory Lagner – 5

10) James Goulding III – 5

11) James Ward – 5

12) Dean Lagner – 5

13) Roger Sorrells – 5

14) Jason Spaulding – 5

15) Scott Pomroy – 5

16) Bob Nile – 5

17) Justin Quinones – 5

18.) Tim Schneider – 5

19) Brett Mason – 5

20) Steve Closuit – 5

21) John Archer – 5

22) Arthur Meether – 5
